India's Ministry of External Affairs announced on Friday, 16 October, that Sudhakar Dalela will be its next ambassador to Nepal. The statement said he would take up the post soon.
Dalela, a 1993-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, has been the ministry's Secretary (Economic Relations) since 2025. Before that he spent about three years as ambassador to Bhutan. Between 2016 and 2019 he was joint secretary of the ministry's North Division, where he worked directly on relations with Nepal and Bhutan.
Republica noted that New Delhi has typically sent additional secretary-level diplomats to Kathmandu, making a secretary-rank appointment a break with practice. Onlinekhabar said it was possibly the first time a secretary-level career diplomat from the ministry had been named to the post.
A long South Asia record
His postings have included Tel Aviv, Brasília, Chicago, Dhaka, Geneva, Thimphu and Washington DC. He served as a director in the Indian prime minister's office from 2009 to 2011 and has worked on trade policy, including stints connected with the World Trade Organisation.
He succeeds Naveen Srivastava, a batchmate, who took charge in Kathmandu on 25 June 2022 and served for more than four years. The post had been vacant since Srivastava returned to New Delhi about two weeks ago. Republica reported that Nepal's foreign ministry had already received Dalela's name for agrément.
Nepal, for its part, has nominated Nishchal Nath Pandey as ambassador to India; the Parliamentary Hearing Committee has cleared him and his appointment awaits formal completion. Republica has reported that Prime Minister Balendra Shah's visit to India is likely in the last week of November.
